Affective, behavioral engagement

Details:

The definitions under this heading explicitly involve technology; the phenomenon is a subjective property of an individual person; the source of the stimuli in the experience is only external (outside the body); and there is an inaccurate perceptioon that technology is not involved in the experience when it is; and the aspect of the phenonenon that is of primary interest is related to social entitites (human, electronic and otherwise), specifically perceptions of interdependent, multi-channel affective and behavioral engagement with others.

Sample defintion(s):

Harms & Biocca (2004):
“Social presence in a mutual interaction with a perceived entity refers to the degree of initial awareness, allocated attention, the capacity for both content and affective comprehension, and the capacity for both affective and behavioral interdependence with said entity.”

Bente, Ruggenberg, Kramer (2004):
“They [Biocca et al, 2001] define social presence as “the moment-by-moment awareness of the co-presence of another sentient being accompanied by a sense of engagement with the other.”
