On December 9, 2003, I broke my ankle, specifically my distal
fibula, in a bicycle accident on Temple's main campus (I used my right
foot to try to stay balanced after hitting a small patch of slush).
X-rays taken December 16, 2003 (the break is the gap in the left
smaller bone
in the two views in the first picture and the 'chip' above the heel in
the second picture)
X-rays taken December 29, 2003 (1 week after surgery; the 3.5
inch titanium plate and 6 titanium screws hold the parts of the broken
bone in place; the break can be seen just below the vertical screw in
the first x-ray; 14 staples in the incision are visible in each view;
the fiberglass cast is visible away from the ankle)
X-rays taken January 19, 2004 (4 weeks after surgery; the gap
is less noticeable as the bone is regenerating; the staples and cast
are gone).
